Dermatology (Skin & Ears)

Treating allergies, parasites, infections, and hormonal disorders.

Dermatology evaluates diseases of the skin, including the outer ear canals. Skin diseases are one of the most common problems we see in veterinary practice. Skin conditions can cause hair loss, lumps or masses, itchy or red skin, flaky or greasy skin, discoloured skin, or sores. We may prescribe tests such as skin scrapings (used to look for parasites living on the skin's surface), hair plucks (to diagnose ringworm), skin/ear swabs (to look for yeast and bacteria), skin biopsies, or bloodwork. For more information about our dermatology services, you can call us at 416-538-8387.

How can I help prevent skin infections in pets?

Here are some ways in which you can help protect your pet from skin infections.

  • Many skin infections are caused by ticks and fleas. Consult your veterinarian and follow their instructions on preventing ticks and fleas.
  • Use pet-friendly products to keep your pets' hair and coat clean and well-groomed at all times.
  • Never use products manufactured for humans on any pet. They can cause irritation and infections.
  • Take note of lumps and bumps on your pet's body. If you notice your pet excessively scratching or licking, inspect the area and if you see a concern, call your veterinarian immediately.

How are allergies detected in dogs and cats?

Veterinarians routinely carry out tests to figure out what is causing allergies in feline and canine pets. These tests can be divided into two categories: one is for testing food allergies and the other is for detecting environmental allergies. Food allergy tests include blood serum testing, elimination diet trials, saliva testing, and hair testing. Environmental allergy tests include diagnosing atopy, intradermal skin testing, blood serum testing, and hair and saliva testing.
